Fall 2009 STAR Awards go
to...
Boys Soccer – Dan Stephens, a senior, is the
son of Dirk and Deb Stephens of Montour Falls. This is his fourth year as a
varsity starter and he had a tremendous year. He was a captain of the team and
showed great leadership on and off the field. Dan spent most of the season
anchoring the center midfield and later became a very effective forward
finishing with 13 goals and 16 assists. He was the MVP for Small Schools and
scored a goal in the exceptional senior game. He continually works to make
himself and his team better and enjoys volunteering his time with youth sports
and Interact. He is also a member of the state academic award team for boys
soccer.
Girls Soccer – Michelle Melanson, a junior, is
the daughter of Bruce and Debra Melanson of Montour Falls. She was the sweeper
for the girls’ team this year. Michelle was the leader in the backfield and
her ability to defend continually limited the opposing teams scoring chances.
Her speed and quickness also made it very difficult for teams to get behind the
OM backfields. She is also a member of the state academic award team for girls
soccer.
Football – Luke Smith, a senior, is the son of
Chuck and Kim Smith of Alpine. Luke was the leading rusher for the football team
with 144 carries for 748 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was also the leading tackler
on defense averaging over 11 tackles per game. He was selected to the all-star
team for the 2nd year and was selected to represent OMCS in the Ernie Davis
Classic exceptional senior game.
Girls Swimming – Alyssa Bleiler, a junior, is
the daughter of Dr. Brian and Loueda Bleiler of Odessa. She has shown
determination, sportsmanship and athleticism throughout the season. Alyssa comes
to practice prepared and ready to work hard. She is always pushing her teammates
to be the best they can be.
Volleyball – Stephanie Letteer, a senior, is
the daughter of Maureen Letter of Odessa. She has been a member of the varsity
team for two seasons and was a captain this year. She is an extremely important
part of the team. As the setter, she is constantly running all over the court to
get the ball wherever it was passed. The girls rely on her to always take the
second touch no matter where they pass to. This year, she really focused on her
defense and transitioning as well, and really improved on both aspects. She
finished the season with 116 service points, 25 aces, 16 kills, 177 assists and
50 digs. She was also named to the IAC All-Star Honorable mention team for the
division and was invited to be part of the exceptional senior game. She is a
very hard working and dedicated athlete. She plays with a tremendous amount of
emotion and goes all out every game. In addition to her accomplishments on the
court, she excels in the classroom and is currently ranked 2nd in her class. She
is also a member of the state academic award team for volleyball.
